A full-body dumbbell routine can be a straightforward way to build strength at home. Start with a weight you can move steadily and focus on learning the movement before making it harder.

Five beginner dumbbell exercises

1. Goblet squat

Hold one dumbbell close to your chest, lower to a comfortable depth, and stand with control.

2. Dumbbell floor press

Lie on the floor with a dumbbell in each hand, press upward smoothly, and lower until the upper arms touch the floor lightly.

3. One-arm row

Support one hand on a bench or sturdy surface, row the dumbbell toward your hip, then change sides.

4. Romanian deadlift

Hold dumbbells by your sides, hinge at the hips, and stand tall by using the hips rather than rounding the back.

5. Supported split squat

Hold a stable support and lower through a short, comfortable range before switching legs.

Beginner schedule

Perform one or two sets of each exercise once or twice a week, leaving time for recovery. Add a little weight or a few repetitions only after several comfortable sessions.

Safety

Use a clear exercise area and weights you can control. Stop for sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain, or symptoms that concern you, and seek individualized guidance when needed.
