Resistance bands are a practical way to begin strength training at home. Start with a light band, move slowly, and choose a level of tension that lets you keep comfortable control from start to finish.

Six resistance band exercises for beginners

1. Band row

Anchor the band securely at about chest height, pull the handles toward your ribs, and return slowly.

2. Chest press

With a secure anchor behind you, press the handles forward without locking the elbows forcefully.

3. Squat to press

Stand on a light band, perform a comfortable squat, then press overhead only if your shoulders feel good.

4. Glute bridge with band

Place a light band above the knees, lift the hips with control, and gently press the knees outward.

5. Biceps curl

Stand on the band and curl slowly. Keep the elbows close to your sides.

6. Lateral walk

Place a loop band above the knees or around the ankles if comfortable, then take small controlled side steps.

Simple beginner plan

Choose three movements, do one or two easy sets, and leave a few repetitions in reserve. Add repetitions or slightly more resistance only when your form stays steady.

Safety

Inspect bands and anchors before each session. Stop for sharp pain, dizziness, chest pain, or symptoms that concern you, and seek individualized guidance when needed.
